I miss my music.
My iPod is cram-packed full of different genres. I've got Enya and Air for the walk home from a completely depressing and shite day at work, when I need my head cleared and my nerves calmed. I've got Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stoneage for when I feel like a bit of head-bobbing and air-punching. There's Bowie and Queen for when I want guaranteed awesomeness.
Which is all good.
But there's something I miss. When I was in my late teens, I was a major fan of a Brissie band called george. I'd pay $8 to go and see them play and buy all of their EP's while they were still breaking through and being recognised. The ticket prices slowly rose, as did the crowd numbers.
They gained radio airplay, and people at gigs started screaming "I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!! OH MY GOD!!!" I still religiously bought their CD's, but it wasn't so hard to find them anymore. I still liked the music, but so did everyone. When people asked what sort of music I liked, they no longer looked puzzled by my answer.
And it was sort of heartbreaking. Does that seem stupid?
I still appreciate their music, several years later, but I miss the feeling of liking something new, and raw, and untouched and beautiful and exciting.
Do you have a secret band you can tell me about? I promise I won't tell.

I think that it is normal. We al want to find something that we can keep to ourselves. Its like finding a bit of treasure, or knowing a secret. Its al ours, and no one elses. It mkes us feel special, unique.
Like you......you are a new found band that I like to listen to
Not really a secret anymore but I like to think he was several years ago when I first started going to his gigs....www.carus.com.au good with the band, GREAT solo.
Like to see others recommendations too as I am really not into that much Aussie stuff atm, and that is sad!!!
If you haven't heard of 'Low', they are a band that has been pumping out great little indy tracks for years. You've probably heard of Broken Social Scene, Arcade fire and Stars, but they are all good as well.
If you're interested in a little retro reflection, why don't you go back and listen to a few old Icehouse albums. Listening to them now makes me realize just how awesome they were.
I guess I haven't really given you anything too obscure or untrammeled - I'm not so sure you'd dig the more bizarre things that I like. But maybe that's exactly what you're looking for. I'll have a think about it and get back to you.
cringe
i secretly love take that.
coming from a girl with tattoos and a penchant for the deftones, its a little scary to think about.
I used to manage bands, so have encountered lots of obscure ones, especially Australian ones, and think it's a pity that a lot of people will never get to hear what they did. Playground, Karamazoff Bike, Cuss, Way Hip Antelopes, Super Happy Clowns, just to name a few. Plus of course the ones I managed.
But I'm disappointed that George have vanished. I'm trying to find out when they'll be back.
I don't think they're so secret, but the most unknown that I'm currently into are Wilco, Adem, Martha Wainright and the more known Bjork (live boxset) and Dave Matthews Band (live).
:( I have never had a secret band.
But I have seen some major indie acts when they were just spotty teenage support acts. :)
I went all Goth when I was 17 [proper Gothic Punk - not emo] and that got me the same "Er....who?" look in the late 80's, early 90's
you mean for sure. I was going to put in a comment but it was too big. I think I'll write it up instead.
*I know what you mean for sure.
I get it GBE. I felt that way when I first discovered Lior and his cute little jewfro. I'd sit in my room with the rain outside playing his happy tunes and thinking how great it was that he was such a secret.
Then came popularity.
Then came a live gig cd.
Then came me walking into Target this afternoon to try to find (unsuccessfully) some sandshoes and there he was, blazing over the speakers.
It's snobbish and stuff, but man it sucks to have the plebs hear what you love.
PS Enny, I also love Martha Wainwright. My favourite song is Factory.
It's not quite the same, but years ago I saw the video clip to "Who Let The Dogs Out" in the very wee hours when I was drinking with my friends. We were suprised that a song quite so awful even had a video clip, and talked about how we were probabaly the only people who'd ever know about it. And what do you know, a week later, it was played every two minutes on every broadcasting medium available. Spooky.
Well thanks, Jason. I think you're right - I guess I do want something that I can just keep to myself.
Yublocka, I'll check out the site, ta. The only Aussie music I seem to hear lately is The Veronicas and Australian Idol finalists. This upsets me.
Ooh, lots of bands to look up, thanks Don. If you do have any other thoughts, please do let me know. I'd really appreciate it.
Cath, it's ok. I used to worship the Backstreet Boys and can still do the dance moves from their film clips.
Aurelius, thank you, more band names to add to the list. I'm keeping an ear out for george, too. I think that Ty is still performing regularly, but no idea on the others. Gone are the days when I could go george-spotting in the Valley on a Saturday. Sigh.
Ta, Enny! Writing down, writing down, writing down. I haven't heard much of Bjork since the 'it's oh so quiet, shh, shh' days. I need to make more of an effort.
Ok Brett, how about you and I start up our own secret band, so then we'll both have one? We can call it Secret Band. There's millions of kids trying to pull off the goth look lately. Them and their bloody Ramones t-shirts. I just want to grab them and yell "NAME A RAMONES SONG, PUNK!"
Mark, you mean I miss out on the world's biggest comment? This seems unfair to me.
Audrey, I'm glad you get me. When the kids start yelling "I LOVE YOU" I start thinking 'hey, punk - were you there in 2001 buying the first $10 shirts from the fold-up table they were using as a merch stand? HMM? No. DIDN'T THINK SO.'
Jen, that is spooky. What's also spooky is that you managed to sit through Who Let The Dogs Out for the first time without your ears bleeding. Why am I not a bazillionaire, with my dodgy guitar strumming and cat-being-strangled singing?
The question now becomes are you not a bazillionaire simply because you don't yet have a video clip to play in the wee hours on MTV?
Because really, if the Baha Men can do it, who can't?
(I'm not actually sure if they made bazillions, they probabaly just made a few thousand and faded back into obscurity. I don't recall any other Baha Men hits.)
'It's Oh So Quiet' is her WORST! She has rock solid gold in there =o)
PS Audrey, I'm more partial to 'Don't Forget' atm =o)
Jen, I'm pretty sure that was their one and only. I should most definitely make a dodgy clip for late-night airing. Perhaps one featuring dogs, and a song with really annoying lyrics. Fame, here I come!
Enny, I believe you. I'll have to look into the land of Bjork a bit further...
My secret band was Type O Negative. Then they kinda went big, and now they're kinda underground again.
Lead singer is crush-0-licious, in that "I want to drink your blood" kind of way.....
*deep sigh*
I can smell cinnamon and fallen leaves when I even think about them. They're the reason I love clove cigarettes. (No inhaling - puffing like on a cigar! All the attitude with none of the lung cancer....)
- M
Oh man, those guys look scary. And I've gotta get me some clove cigarettes! Then I could hang out with the smoking gang and totally fit in.
