Etc.
- John and I went to a preview screening of Pan's Labyrinth at the Dendy today and it was So Much More than I could ever have imagined it to be. It was utterly superb. Even John, who is a notorious HoMM (Hater of Most Movies) thought it was brilliant. And, quite frankly, I think that it is highly unlikely that there will be any movie produced this year that can possibly be considered better, in any way. Go and see it, STAT.
(But be warned if you are squeamish. It is incredibly graphic, and the violent scenes range from a man having his face pummeled with the base of a glass bottle until it caves in in a bloody mess, to a man being stabbed in the mouth and the knife ripped out through his cheek. Oh, I've put you off now, haven't I. Seriously, go see it. Just cover your eyes during those bits. And take a sick bag for all of the baby-eating. Ha! Joke.)
If you do go and see it, then please come back to this post and agree with me when I say WHY DID SHE EAT THE GRAPES? Jesus. Give me freaking heart failure, why don't you. - As for Aureya/Epona/whoever, my suspicions most definitely matched popular opinion - I am a firm believer that the e-mail came from the girl in question, rather than her older sister. Even so:
Epona,
Nobody need be out of pocket over this - all I would ask is that the posts be taken down, and I can see that they have.
Thank you,
GBE
And let that be the end of that. - My apologies for joking about baby eating. Poor form. And I, for one, have never partaken in such activities.
- Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club have populated my weekend DVD time this week, and I think I have officially exhausted Blockbuster's collection of Famous Eighties Movies. This saddens me greatly. Do you have a favourite Eighties movie? And if so, what is it, and is it available at my local Blockbuster? I need more legwarmers and big hair, damn it.

My reaction to the brutalness reminds me of how I'd react when I saw my wifes reactions to "The Hills Have Eyes" 2006. I'm definitely going to go and see this though and am pretty excited about it...
Last night wifey and I watched "The Devil Wears Prada". If you haven't seen it, rent it. I thought I'd be miserable, but found myself oddly compelled, in a Hetero way of course, to watch it. Turned out to be a very good movie.
Better Off Dead and Real Genius are true 80's classics... Red Dawn and the Road Warrior are great in the post-apocalyptic Cold War sort of way.
Oh! I completely second 'Better Off Dead'! Tis MrB's fave movie. And has a very young and too too gorgeous John Cusack. And a bizzare animated vegetable scene. And then you can move right along to 'The Sure Thing' - make it all about Cusack and you can't go wrong!
... Or your could try the Corey collection. I must have watched Licence To Drive a hundred times when I was a kid. I think it's the only heather Graham movie ever made where she keeps her clothes on. There's also The Lost Boys, which is probably better but less cheesy.
And PL sounds like it'd be well disturbing.
The Dark Crystal - true 80s fun.
'Labyrinth' has to be up there for 80s viewing, I mean David Bowie's hair alone...
And of course there are those tight, tight pants. Very educational.
You can't forget the classic Ferris Bullers Day Off. I'm also partial to Footloose, Flashdance and Fame.
Hey they all start with F! Its a theme.
St Elmos Fire - Demi Moore tries to kill herself through hypothermia, Judd Nelson is a "stud" and Rob Lowe makes feathered mullets look almost hot.
valley girl, better off dead, fast times at ridgemont high, heathers, modern girls, 3 o'clock high.
John is also a massive GIT (Git, InniT). You can tell him I said that.
Oh, and my fake older sister's name is also Epona. That's right, I named her after the horse from Zelda as well.
I second "Three O'clock High" but another 80's movie I loved, but can't be counted in the high school genre was "No Way Out" with Kevin Costner. Wonderful movie.
THE PRINCESS BRIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I did forget two Star Wars and three Indiana Jones films as well :) (plus a few Muppet movies)
O.o! I know... License To Drive. I *hearted* that movie when I was younger. I'm pretty sure it was like... late 80s-ish?
Glad ya got that entry-stealing thing taken care of! :)
PS: I'm actually "Princess." After I finally de-lurked myself, I figured I might as well just start commenting - even if I do show my "special" tendencies in them and use my real name. Too many "princesses" around now-a-days.
2nd and 3rd all the suggestions I was already thinking of: Princess Bride, Better Off Dead, Lost Boys, Say Anything, Ferris Buehller, and oh yes! Heathers! We just watched Pretty Woman the other day.. I still heart that movie too.
Ooooh blast! I got beaten to The Sure Thing (John Cusack, yummy), The Princess Bride (it's inconceivable that you could go wrong with that film) and Labyrinth, I have the sound track, it's great!
I do think that I am the first to say The Goonies though - a fantastic film!
wxguesser, I am glad that you are going to see it. I'm not sure how it is for you guys in the US, but here it gets hardly any publicity because of the whole Foreign Language thing, which is just about the biggest shame ever. Let me know how you like it :)
Jedimerc, argh! When I was in Blockbuster trying to remember recommendations I was thinking "Real something... Real something..." and couldn't bloody remember. And then as I was leaving I remembered Better Off Dead, too. Gah! Ah well. Next week, yeah!
ActonB, I managed to get The Sure Thing, hurrah! I have no idea how I managed to miss out on all the Cusack Eighties Action growing up. And this animated vegetable business means that Better Off Dead is a guarantee for next week. Yay!
Chesty, I love The Lost Boys. I bought the soundtrack for John. It's such a peculiar mix of serious vampire horror-type stuff and cheesey eighties jokes. I have no idea how they managed to pull it off. And PL left me speechless. The awesomeness overpowers the grossness, I swear!
Don, did that movie frighten the hell out of you when you were a kid? Seriously, skeksis are truly the stuff that nightmares are made of.
Nai, oh yes, I learnt more from David Bowie's pants than I did during several years of school. That movie did actually make me fall completely in love with David Bowie - a love that remains unrequited to this day. Sigh.
Killerrabbit, oh, the F movies. I just finished watching Ferris. And I think that just about anything that can be describe with 'Eighties' and 'Dancing' is an automatic winner.
Original Mel, I think that movie sounds so absolutely perfect that I will have to get it out ASAP and save it for an evening when I can dim the lights, stuff my face and give it my undivided attention.
M, thank you! Many hours of Eighties Viewing Pleasure to come, hurrah!
Sars, I wanted to make a Zelda reference too when I discovered Epona but I think that we might be the only people who sat around playing Nintendo 64 all day. But if I get any emails from people called Ganon or Link, I am SO posting about it.
wxguesser, I did actually see No Way Out at Blockbuster this evening and I stared at it for a couple of minutes, trying to remember why it was ringing bells. And now I know! Damn it! Next time, I swear.
Marcheline - as you wish. (!!!!!)
Jedimerc, I must admit that I was never into the Muppet movies. I must've been locked in a cupboard when that whole fad was going on. Though Star Wars and Indiana were HUGE in my life. No time for love, Dr. Jones!
Ah, Amber, I guessed it my lovely - I clicked your link, y'see, and I was all 'hey! It's Princess. Hey.' Licence to Drive is most def on my list, whoo!
Miss Devylish, funnily enough, I watched Pretty Woman the other day, too. I absolutely want to kill George from Seinfeld in that movie. What an arse!
Ellie, I really do need to jump on this John Cusack bandwagon. And I also have the Labyrinth soundtrack. Next time I am in Bowen, I will visit you and we can sing 'Dance, Magic, Dance' together. I love The Goonies. I have seen it approximately one million times. I am going to go and practise the Truffle Shuffle now.
Michellesarah, I bought Labyrinth a couple of weeks ago. It was something like $10 - BARGAIN. It used to only be available on DVD if you bought it on ebay from somewhere dodgy. Those pants seriously impacted my upbringing.
I'm with Nai and Marcheline. I loved the Labrynth. David Bowie was my first celebrity crush. That disturbs me now.
And Princess Bride, its such a classic.
OMG I can't believe how many Sure Thing fans there are. You people have taste! I didn't think it was that popular... But it's my FAVE.
How about Karate Kid 1, 2 & 3? Which always reminds me of Gremlins for some reason... Mr Miyagi maybe? And no legwarmers in sight, but The Dark Crystal is brilliant, that was definitely a fave in the 80's. Don't forget Michael J Fox either - Teen Wolf, Back to the Future and The Secret of My Success were so good!!
Dammit now I'm gonna have to join my local dodgy non-blockbuster to get my fix!!
Phishez, yes, and oh yes. If I ever have kids, they will be sitting down and watching Every Single One of my favourite eighties movies until they appreciate just how good and cheesey they are.
Hi Aussie Rock Chick! I watched The Sure Thing last week and I have no idea how I missed out on all of this John Cusack action but can now safely say that he is my Number One 1988 Husband. I've got another two of his movies for this week, too. Yay! Ooh, Michael J Fox - I'd forgotten about him. He's now on my list. Especially Teen Wolf - I haven't seen that in at least a million years.
